Theoretically, No. is an open-access, non-peer-reviewed journal publishing anything that appeared important until it was written down.
The journal welcomes theoretically ambitious work, methodologically questionable observations, inconclusive arguments, and conclusions that remain emotionally significant despite limited evidence. It is particularly interested in manuscripts that identify an important problem, examine it at unnecessary length, and leave the reader less certain than before.
Acceptable methods include close reading, distant reading, looking at something for an unusually long time, downloading a dataset out of curiosity, remembering something someone once said, and constructing an argument around a source discovered while avoiding another task. Statistical significance is neither required nor actively discouraged. Sample sizes may range from one to an amount large enough to make the author nervous about interpretation.
Submissions are assessed by no independent experts and are accepted whenever the editors can no longer identify a convincing reason to postpone publication. Because the Editor-in-Chief is frequently also the author, conflicts of interest are not eliminated but incorporated into the journal’s administrative structure. The Deputy Editor may additionally have assisted with the wording, formatting, metadata, argument, or emotional recovery of the manuscript.
Although officially described as a quarterly journal, Theoretically, No. publishes at intervals determined by available material, editorial energy, unresolved formatting questions, and whether the current collection of documents can plausibly be called an issue. A volume corresponds to a calendar year unless doing so later becomes inconvenient.
